Loneliness, social support in adulthood

The relationships between social support and loneliness: A meta-analysis and review by Xing Zhang The loneliness of modern people is becoming more and more prominent, and has brought profoundly negative effects on mental health. Social support is an important predictor of loneliness. However, the size of the correlation reported by studies on the relation between social support and loneliness varies greatly. The aim of this meta-analysis is to determine the relation between social support and loneliness. One hundred and seventy-seven articles (N = 113,427) were identified, and robust variance estimation with random effects were used. As expected, higher levels of social support were negatively correlated with loneliness (r = −0.39). The association between social support and loneliness were also moderated by several variables. Specifically, the negative relationship between loneliness and social support among rural populations is stronger than that of urban populations in Chinese samples, the effect of perceived social support (r = −0.45) on loneliness is greater than that of other social supports (r = −0.36), and the friend support (r = −0.48) played a more important role in reducing loneliness than that of two other supports (family support: r = −0.34; significant other support: r = −0.40). The current results support robust links between social support and loneliness, emphasizing the important role of social support in reducing levels of loneliness, this may have some implications for future research and loneliness treatments. 1. Quality vs. Quantity of Relationships: The quality of social relationships is more important than the quantity. Meaningful and supportive interactions are more effective in alleviating loneliness compared to having many superficial connections. 2. Role of Technology: Digital communication tools can provide social support and reduce loneliness, especially for those with limited mobility or access to in-person interactions. However, over-reliance on digital interactions without face-to-face contact can sometimes exacerbate feelings of loneliness. 3. Interventions and Strategies: Effective interventions to reduce loneliness include promoting social skills, enhancing social networks, providing opportunities for social interaction, and community-based programs aimed at fostering social inclusion.

Later-Life Social Support and Service Provision in Diverse and Vulnerable Populations: Understanding Networks of Care by Janet M. Wilmoth and Merril D. Silverstein Later-Life Social Support and Service Provision in Diverse and Vulnerable Populations offers current, multidisciplinary perspectives on social support and service provision to older Americans. The chapters trace how our understanding of social support among older adults has developed over the past 40 years and explore current gerontological research in the area. They consider how informal care arrangements articulate with formal long-term care policies and programs to provide support to the diverse population of older Americans. They also emphasize heterogeneity in the composition of support networks, particularly in relation to gender, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, and immigrant status. Collectively, the chapters provide insight into the complexity of older adult’s social support networks that can be used to improve the services provided to caregivers and care recipients as well as the policies that promote high-quality support to people of all ages who are in need of assistance.

At Home in the City: Growing Old in Urban America by Stacy Torres To understand elders' experiences of aging in place, sociologist Stacy Torres spent five years with longtime New York City residents as they coped with health setbacks, depression, gentrification, financial struggles, the accumulated losses of neighbors, friends, and family, and other everyday challenges. The sensitive portrait Torres paints in At Home in the City moves us beyond stereotypes of older people as either rich and pampered or downtrodden and frail to capture the multilayered complexity of late life. These pages chronicle how a nondescript bakery in Manhattan served as a public living room, providing company to ease loneliness and a sympathetic ear to witness the monumental and mundane struggles of late life. Through years of careful observation, Torres peels away the layers of this oft-neglected social world and explores the constellation of relationships and experiences that Western culture often renders invisible or frames as a problem. At Home in the City strikes a realistic balance as it highlights how people find support, flex their resilience, and assert their importance in their communities in old age.

The Link Between Childhood Trauma and Adult Loneliness Crossing socioeconomic and geographic boundaries, loneliness doesn’t discriminate. It’s not linked to any specific personality type or lifestyle. Anyone can feel its pain. However, when all other factors are equal, individuals who’ve experienced significant childhood trauma are at a higher risk of experiencing chronic loneliness in adulthood.

Advancing Social Connection as a Public Health Priority in the United States by Holt-Lunstad, J. B. A robust body of scientific evidence indicates that being embedded in high-quality close relationships and feeling socially connected to the people in your life is associated with decreased risk for all-cause mortality as well as a range of disease morbidities. Just as we have come to better understand the factors that contribute to multifaceted public health problems ranging from violence to obesity, we must now consider the micro- (e.g., genetic markers of susceptibility, gene-environment interactions) to macro- (e.g., cultural norms, neighborhood characteristics) level processes through which social relationships influence physical health, as well as the pathways by which we may intervene to reduce risk and improve public health.
