"Happiness at Different Ages: The Social Context Matters" By: John F. Helliwell, Max B. Norton, Haifang Huang, Shun Wang This paper uses a variety of individual-level survey data from several countries to test for interactions between subjective well-being at different ages and variables measuring the nature and quality of the social context at work, at home, and in the community. While earlier studies have found important age patterns (often U-shaped) and social context effects, these two sets of variables have generally been treated as mutually independent. We test for and find several large and highly significant interactions. Results are presented for life evaluations and (in some surveys) for happiness yesterday, in models with and without other control variables. The U-shape in age is found to be significantly flatter, and well-being in the middle of the age range higher, for those who are in workplaces with partner-like superiors, for those living as couples, and for those who have lived for longer in their communities. A strong sense of community belonging is associated with greater life satisfaction at all ages, but especially so at ages 60 and above, in some samples deepening the U-shape in age by increasing the size of the life satisfaction gains following the mid-life low. The research emphasizes that the social environment plays a critical role in shaping happiness, especially as people age.

"Generational Differences in Happiness: A Meta-Analysis" By: Various Authors This meta-analysis examines happiness levels across different generations, analyzing a broad range of studies to identify patterns and differences in subjective well-being. Generational differences: Studies have shown that there are significant differences in happiness between generations. Older generations (such as baby boomers) report significantly higher subjective well-being than younger generations (such as millennials and Gen Z). This suggests that people's happiness tends to increase gradually as they get older.

Generational Affiliation as a Component of Culture: Focus Group Perspectives of Three Generational Cohorts (University of Arkansas) The purpose of this study was to explore the multicultural elements related to generational affiliation. Much of current generational literature is anecdotal and does not empirically explore the culture of each generation. A constructivist ground theory approach was applied to the study of three generational cohorts (Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and Millennials) using focus groups to (a) explore the values, beliefs, and worldview inherent to each generation, and (b) extend theory on multiculturalism Data from nine focus groups, three for each generational cohort, were analyzed for key themes within each generational cohort. Results indicated that, in keeping with the American Counseling Association's call for counselors to be multiculturally competent, generational culture should be incorporated into counselor training and continued education.

Jean Twenge PhD - Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents―and What They Mean for America's Future Hardcover (April 25, 2023) A groundbreaking, “lavishly informative” (The New York Times) portrait of the six generations that currently live in the United States and how they connect, conflict, and compete with one another. Upending the conventional theory that generational differences are caused by major events, Dr. Jean Twenge analyzes data on 39 million people from robust national surveys—some going back nearly a century—to show that changes in technology are the underlying driver of each generation’s unique makeup. In this revelatory work, Twenge outlines key shifts in attitudes and lifestyle choices that define each generation regarding gender, income, politics, race, sexuality, marriage, mental health, and much more.

Fuzzy But Useful Constructs: Making Sense of the Differences Between Generations - Univ from "Work, Aging and Retirement", journal - Volume 3, Issue 2, 1 April 2017, Pages 130–139. While the research on generational differences has continued to grow, there are still questions about whether “generation” is a useful construct. In this study, generational boundaries or cut-offs are examined using a large, nationally representative sample of high school seniors whose attitudes and work values were assessed over time. Compared to Boomers and GenX’ers at the same age, Millennials were less likely to endorse social values (such as making friends at work) and more likely to endorse leisure values (such as vacation time). For workplace settings, Millennials were less likely than GenX’ers to favor owning their own business or working for a large corporation and were less likely than Boomers to favor working at a social service organization. However, while mean-level generational differences were apparent, there were no clear cut-offs between generations. Instead, the trends were more gradual and linear, suggesting that generations might be best conceptualized as fuzzy social constructs. Considerations for the use of generations as a meaningful construct are discussed.

Generational identities: Historical and literary perspectives by Helen Kingstone Discussions of generational identities need to take into account their long and non-linear history. Our present focus on intergenerational inequity Baby-Boomers vs. Millennials disregards the much more complex history of this social identity. This paper by a historian and literary scholar teases apart (1) the diachronic and synchronic meanings of ‘generation’, (2) the difference between ‘a generation in itself’ from ‘a generation for itself’ that has a social identity, and (3) generational identities that are claimed from within or ascribed from without. This paper places the question of how generational change takes place into historical context, showing that while generational identities came to focused attention during the First World War, they arguably began a century earlier, in the upheavals of the French Revolution and worldwide Napoleonic Wars. Nineteenth-century intellectual movements were often generation-conscious, though these identities did not translate across the social spectrum. The paper emphasises the intersectional nature of any generational taxonomy in relation to class, gender, race and national context, drawing brief examples from independence-era Jamaica, post-Soviet Russia, and mid-twentieth-century UK and USA. A final section highlights the value of ‘intergenerational’ approaches over those that emphasize a ‘generation gap’.

Kings College, London - Free Online Lecture "Generations: Does When You’re Born Shape Who You Are?" Generational thinking is a really big idea that’s been horribly corrupted by endless stereotypes, cliches and myths. This is a real shame, because a better understanding of what’s truly different between generations is a key way to understand the future for our own workforces, clients and society in general. In this session, Professor Bobby Duffy will separate the myths from realities, and give participants a simple framework to understand the type of change we’re seeing. This is vital for leaders in how they engage with their own changing workforce, how they understand changing demand in their market, and how they themselves have been shaped by when they were born.
