The Tao and Contributions of Eastern Philosophy to Happiness

Ancient Chinese philosophical advice: can it help us find happiness today? Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are three main classic Chinese philosophy schools, which all deal with the question of how one should live. In this paper, we first review these ancient recommendations and next consider whether they promise a happy life in present-day society. Recommended behaviours found in the ancient texts are compared with conditions for happiness as observed in present-day empirical investigations. Classic Confucianism appears to offer the most apt advice for finding happiness in present-day society, in particular because it recommends that one should be involved in real life. Classic Taoist advice is second best: its strong point is that it advises us against too much social conformism and bookishness. The advice given by classic Buddhists is better not followed in modern society.

Joy in Chinese philosophy There are three main currents in Chinese philosophy: Confucianism, Taoism and Zen Buddhism. The spirit of joy runs through them all, although each has its own mode of joy. Generally speaking, the Confucian joy springs from the love of learning, the harmony of human relations and the realization of one's manhood or humanity; the Taoist joy consists in untrammeled freedom and detachment from things mundane, in keeping oneself in tune and harmony with Nature, in self-realization through selflessness; and the joy of Zen is found in seeing one's true nature and thereby attaining enlightenment, in the pleasant surprise of self-discovery, in the harmonization of the this-worldly with the other-worldly. The idea of harmony is the keynote of all the three types of joy. Where there is harmony, there is joy.

Origins of Happiness - Wu Wei Wei Wu Wei is a Taoist concept which roughly translates as "not doing." It means that all our actions should flow in harmony with nature and with the things happening around us. Instead of fighting against life events, we should try to flow with them, incorporate them into our lives, and align our actions to meet with them.

Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, Translation Sam Torode and Dwight Goddard. The Tao Te Ching is a series of meditations on the mysterious nature of the Tao—the Way, the Light, the very Source of all existence. According to Lao Tzu (a name meaning "the old master"), the Tao is found where we would least expect it—not in the strong but in the weak; not in speech but in silence; not in doing but in "not-doing." Compiled in China around 2,500 years ago, the Tao Te Ching is beloved by seekers all the world over. This edition is rendered in poetic language by Sam Torode, based on the 1919 translation by Dwight Goddard, making this ancient work accessible to contemporary readers.

The Tao of Happiness: Stories from Chuang Tzu for Your Spiritual Journey by Derek Lin If you have not encountered Chuang Tzu before, prepare yourself for a treat. He was the sage who stood apart from all others in Chinese history. He was a unique presence, a great mind like no one before or since. Chuang Tzu quickly distinguished himself and became well known for his deep understanding and sense of humor. His mastery was such that he could explain the Tao with simple stories, and his humor was such that he could see the joy in ordinary things. He taught his students about “carefree wandering”—the path of moving through life with a free and happy heart, regardless of how turbulent the journey might be. It is time for modern readers to join in on the fun. Chuang Tzu’s wisdom is not just for Eastern culture, but for all of humanity. We may not have the instability or the clash of massive armies indicative of Chuang Tzu’s time, but we have a lot of stress and tension in our modern world. Many of us find ourselves fighting little battles on the personal front just to get through the day. We can benefit greatly from Chuang Tzu’s teachings. These parables are presented throughout this book and juxtaposed with the charming and intelligent prose of modern-day Taoist teacher and author Derek Lin. Together, Chuang Tzu and Lin will present you with simple lessons that will have a lasting impact on your life.
